Joslyn Kilborn, MA, CCCThe primary focus of my counselling practice, whether explicit or implicit, is caring for the soul. I believe that one of the main ways the soul can get our attention in our distracted lives is through complaint: melancholy, anxiety, yearning for belonging, lack of fulfilment, blind reactivity. The urgent cry of pain is often easier to hear than the still-small voice within. This is how the soul might land us in counselling, where we can find help to listen to and through the complaints, to translate their message.
My therapeutic process is somatic, which distinguishes itself from talk therapy by going beyond engaging solely with the mind. Somatic therapies are based on current neuroscience and polyvagal theory, and work with the body (primarily the nervous system) as a tool of inquiry and change. We are souls, but we live our whole lives in our bodies, and they ultimately have a lot of say in how we habitually show up in the world. Our bodies also put us in touch with two ways we can perceive and experience the soul: the felt sense and the embodied imagination. Through these we are able to begin to touch and love the mystery that lies at the heart of our being. I am here because I believe in the human adventure. I believe that our soul, the very essence of us, is already telling us what we need—and that we often need help from others to listen to and through the complaints, to trust that still-small voice, to translate the message. |
